live music: Twisted Sister’s Twisted Christmas x Best Buy Theater x 12.17.11

Dee Snider Twisted Sister's Twisted Christmas NYC 2011

Best Buy Theater, NYC December 17, 2011 – I grew up listening to my fair share of metal back in the day…and at the forefront was Twisted Sister. Fast foward 20+ years and they are still kickin’ ass! I have to say my Christmas spirit was waning a little bit until I walked up to the will call window at the Best Buy Theater in Times Square and was handed my ticket/credentials and walked in to the packed venue. I usually tend to steer clear of Times Square and the the hoards of tourists that flock to it…but i did it anyway in hopes of what was to come.

I was running a little late and heard the band already tearing into “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”. I ran down the escalator, stopped at the merch table to set up my 2 cameras and lens and charged through the crowd to get to the photo pit up front. The photo pit was packed…maybe 25 photogs in there jockeying for spots and shots. Since I was late to the party, I only got between the 2 guitarists facing stage left. I later found out that I missed Dee Snider coming out on a Santa sleigh in a Santa outfit being pulled by little hottie elves.

The band sounded great…like they haven’t lost a step. They put their own metal spin on Christmas classics. I gotta say…it was starting to feel a little bit more like Christmas. Next up was the classic track “The Kids are Back” from 1983’s “You Can’t Stop Rock N Roll” album. The elves came back out flanking each end of the stage with foam making machines making it snow on the photogs and all the “SMF’s” [Sick Mother Fuckers] in the fist few rows. Next up they kicked backed into Christmas mode with “White Christmas”…again adding a touch of Twisted Metal to the holiday.

After song 3, we were escorted out of the pit. I jumped through the crowd and shimmied up the side of the theater to the raised middle section of the club. I dipped up the steps to the elevated VIP section on the left side for a few full band/stage shots…and off we go. I had another event to shoot that night so I bailed during the 4th song.

I gotta say that I went in with no expectations on this one and left completely satisfied and ready to rock the Christmas season! The band was tight, the lights and stage were on point.
