Terminal 5, NYC 2.17.12 – I’ve been hearing a buzz about the Brooklyn based “noise pop” band Sleigh Bells lately and was a bit curious to see/hear the hype. I diddn’t have this show on my radar until a few days before the show when a friend/music photographer asked me if I was going. I said no. He told me they were going to be on Saturday Night Live the night after this show. That peeked my interest. I’m always down to shoot the hot/up and coming bands…whether I like the music or not. He graciously hooked me up with a ticket/photo pass for the show.
The 2-piece band is on the road in support of their new LP entitled “Reign Of Terror”…a follow up to 2010’s “Treats”. The band consists of singer Alexis Krauss and guitarist Derek Miller. Tonight they had a third player on stage with them.
While not my type of music, I can see why people are crazy for this band. The energy is amazing. Great voice among their heavy sound…a mixture of rock and electronica.
Tonight’s show was a bit tricky to shoot for a number of reasons. Since this band is red hot at the moment, that means more photographers in the photo pit and less lateral movement for us all. Bowery Presents was filming the show for a live webcast that night and had a camera in the photo pit and a few guys working it. Lastly, while the lights at this venue are usually spot on and solid, tonight they were…for the most part…dark and frenetic. We all really had our work cut out for us.
