Beacon Theater, NYC 12.30.11 – Admittedly, I havent seen or listened to Govt Mule in quite a few years. We used to go see them all the time back in the day [early-mid 2000’s]. Went to quite a few NYE shows with them as well. It was starting to get a little stale for me. I had to give it a rest. Now seemed like a good enough time to give it another go. Or maybe my Dec calendar was a little light and I needed to round out the year with…something.
I LOVE seeing shows at the Beacon Theater on the Upper West Side. I love the atmosphere/decor, the history, the sound…and well I guess depending on the band…sometimes the lights. I’m usually on the floor for shows there…but there really is no bad seat in the house.
I usually don’t get a ticket thrown in with my credentials but tonight I did. Actually, someone messed up and put 2 floor seats in my envelope and no photo pass. As soon as I turned away from the box office, I heard someone asking for 1 ticket. Sold! Off to the side stage door to met the theater rep and sort out another photo pass.
What I don’t like about the Beacon is shooting there. You meet at the side stage door, wait for the MSG rep and we get escorted in to the theater. There is no photo pit as the seats run right up to the front/stage. Which means the photographers have to shoot from a quarter of the way back on either side [pick one side and all the photographers must shoot from the agreed side]. After the third song, if you don’t have a ticket, you are escorted back out the side stage door. Another messed up thing about shooting here is that you won’t be able to grab any shots of the drummer.
I headed to my seat after the third song and scooched in to my seat…right next to the nice guy that bought my extra ticket. Fast foward to the second set. Mule is known for having a few special guests stop by. Tonight’s guests were Nigel Hall, Jimmy Vivino, Hook Herrera, David Hidalgo and Paul Ill. They opened up the set with 2 nice Pink Floyd covers and a Zeppelin tune.
