Roseland, NYC 2.3.12 – Electronic music/DJ’s are something I really don’t photograph at all…just not my scene anymore. Growing up, I was always at the clubs and in college we used to throw parties/raves in Upstate NY. My interest waned from it as I got older. The crowds were getting younger and younger and I guess I just sort of felt out of place or something…not to mention the fact that the dance [house] music I love, doesn’t really get played by anyone anymore. But I digress.
I have some familiarity with DJ A-TRAK when I covered DJ Diabetic’s [Shepard Fairey] after party back in May 2010 and he threw down a nice set. As for SKRILLEX, I had read about him in magazines as the next/current big electronic/dub step DJ. So when I was asked to shoot his show a few weeks ago, I agreed to see what the hype was about. At the time, I didn’t realize it was a full on dance party and that he wasn’t going on until 2AM. A-TRAK was to perform at 12:30 and 2 other DJ’s before that.
I got to the club at about 1AM so I can shoot a little of A-TRAK’s set. The very young crowd was a hot mess and spilled on to the street in front of the club. This quickly reminded me why I don’t go to these events anymore. I grabbed my “All ACCESS” pass when I got inside and shot from various spots in the venue. Lights were basically white and only on A-TRAK and rarely on the crowd.
Next up was the SKRILLEX production…and that’s exactly what it was. He was perched high up in the middle of this huge angular platform…only visible from the shoulders up. We were told we can shoot the first 10 mins from the photo pit. There was only 3 or 4 of us in there. I shot a few minutes from the side of the stage before I entered the pit. Next up, I moved to the middle of the pit directly in front of him. Even with my ear plugs in, the bass was so loud that I thought my ears were gonna pop. I don’t even think I stayed in there for the full 10 mins. I grabbed a few shots and quickly headed for the upper deck. His light/stage show is graphically immense…probably one of the coolest I’ve ever seen. The frenzied crowd ate it all up.
At the time of this posting…in the wake of the recent Grammy’s, SKRILLEX took home 3 Grammy’s last week.
