Fox Theater, Oakland, CA. – Scottish Alt-Rocker and principal founding member of The Talking Heards David Byrne stopped into Oakland with St. Vincent [aka Annie Erin Clark] to play a show at the beautifully restored Fox Theater.
Check out my review in photos…
This was my first time to the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA.
The Fox was originally built in 1928 as a 2,800 seat movie theater. The facade and interior are Middle Eastern themed. The theater closed its doors around 1970 and was purchased by the city of Oakland in 1996 and renovated. The doors finally re-opened in 2006.
The venue is beautiful. It reminded me of the Beacon Theater [NYC] and The Wellmont [NJ]…ornate details preserved, great acoustics, etc.
Got to the venue and down to the photo pit to find a HUGE obstruction in the middle of the pit. My gut feeling told me to start off from stage right. I climbed over the obstruction and waited patiently for the show to start. My hunch paid off. Better shots of Byrne and St. Vincent from my side. After the second song, I climbed back over the obstruction and shot the third song from stage left. Lighting was decent. Had to crank up the ISO a bit. The band sounded great…playing new material and songs from each of their respective careers. They were joined onstage by a full brass section [10-11 players].
