The Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN. – Southern rockers…The Black Crowes reunited to hit the road again on their “Lay Down With Number 13” tour. For those of you that know me well, you know how much I LOVE the Black Crowes. I’ve been seeing them since the beginning of 1995; all across the country. On this date, we traveled to Nashville, TN; the home of the beautiful Ryman Auditorium, for the first of 2 shows. Since the band reunited last month, there have been a few line-up changes…most noticeably the addition of Jackie Greene in place of Luther Dickinson and the absence of our 2 beloved back up singers.
Check out my review in photos…
The Ryman Auditorium is a beautiful venue. This former tabernacle was built in the early 1890’s and was later home to the Grand Ole Opry in the 1940’s. The immense roster of talent that has graced that stage is amazing. The acoustics in this building are great as well as the interior vibe. The original stage and flooring are in tact as well as all the pews.
Peter Framptom was seen entering the building earlier that afternoon for soundcheck. Frampton comes out on stage to join the band on Traffic’s “Medicated Goo”. Was surprised he stayed out there for the next 2 Crowes tunes. Even more so when they broke out Humble Pie’s “Natural Born Boogie”. The next morning I realized that April 20 was the anniversary of Humble Pie’s Steve Marriott’s death.
I was initially told I was shooting the first 2 songs [most bands offer you the first 3] from the back of the balcony. After some persuading, I was given the run of the place [no stage access]. I worked as much of that venue as I could from top to bottom for the first 2 songs [roughly 8-10 mins]. The lighting was decent for the first 2 songs. As per usual…the lighting gets better after the photogs are gone. A big thank you to the staff at the Ryman for being so nice and accommodating to me.
