Beacon Theater, NYC 3.25.12 – Just like the NCAA’s has March Madness, The Allman Brothers Band descend upon the Beacon Theater each year with a 2 week long epic run of shows…Peakin’ At The Beacon.

This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the ABB. I used to go to see them at the Beacon all the time in the early 2000’s. The shows are always so much fun. Plenty of special guests…you never know who’s gonna show up. Last year on the final night of the run, Eric Clapton showed up.

It has been quite a few years since I’ve seen the Allman Brothers Band and figured it was time to drop by for a magical night of music. Upon arriving, a friend of mine had told me that Gregg Allman hurt his back during the show the previous night, left during that show and was taken to the hospital. It was highly unlikely Gregg would be at the final night of this years run…And so it was.

Derek Trucks and Bruce Katz

Enter Bruce Katz. Bruce tours regularly with the Gregg Allman Band. Bruce did a phenominal job filling in for Gregg on this night. He’s an absolutely amazing jazz and blue’s guitarist. Also in the band is Jaimoe and Butch Trucks on drums, Oteil Burbridge on bass, the amazingly talented Derek Trucks and Mr. Warren Haynes.

Warren Haynes

Tonight’s show was a “3 and out” show/shoot for me. This means I had no ticket. Upon waiting by the side stage entrance for the house representative to escort me inside, Warren Haynes hopped out of a car with his signature black button-up gig shirt in hand and posed for pics with fans and signed a few things. He didn’t have a pen so I gave him my Sharpie. He signed my photo pass and moved on down the line. I was escorted in, shot the first 3 songs from the right side of the floor and then escorted out. As I’ve said in the past…the Beacon Theater is a great place to see a show…and a lousy place to shoot a show.

Wishing Gregg Allman a speedy recovery. Hope to see the ABB’s on the road again this spring/summer. Rumor has it they will be on tour with Santana near the end of the year…which will be amazing!
