Ricky “The Rickster” Powell continued his 50th birthday celebration right into a brand new group photography show at Milk Studios/Gallery. The show was curated by Ricky himself and hosted by The Good Life!. Ricky brought together photographers of both the old school and new…including Martha Cooper, Henry Chalfant, Jamel Shabazz, Glen E. Friedman, Cheryl Dunn, Charlie Ahearn, Estevan Oriol and Mel D. Cole to name a few. One notably absent photographer from the show’s inclusion was…ME. C’MON RICKY!!!
The musical selectors for the evening included Jasmine Solano, Smoke L.E.S., TJ Mizell and one of my favorite hip hop DJ’s…Stretch Armstrong.
While the event started at 8pm, I wasn’t able to get to the reception until just after 10pm. I was shooting Twisted Sister’s Twisted Christmas Show at the Best Buy Theater in Times square earlier in the evening. I arrived to a packed Milk Gallery in the Meat Packing District. Upon entering, I saw ?uestlove in the corner chillin, Stretch Armstrong, a few other notable hip-hoppers, graffiti writers, models and photographers; Eric Haze, James TOP, Joe Conzo, Jamel Shabazz, Francisco Reyes, the Serra brothers to name a few.
The show was well-attended throughout the night. It ran just past midnight…an hour later then posted. The lines for the free Heinekins was long, the vibe was chill, the music was pumpin and Ricky was in rare form! Seems homeboy was continuing the celebration of his 50th year on the planet. All that aside…Ricky did a fantastic job curating this show. I wish I could’ve stayed up longer then 6 days so more people could come through and see what’s up.
DJ Stretch Armstrong closed out the night with a killer hip-hop set on the 1’s and 2’s. It’s always a treat to hear/see him spin.
Here’s a few photos from the night.
