Facebook HQ- Menlo Park, CA. – The annual “Rockin’ The Bay” fundraiser for the Little Kids Rock Program was held at the Facebook HQ in Menlo Park, CA. This years event was in memorium/honor of Facebook Chef and the events creator, Chef Josef Desimone as well as the “Living The Dream” Award recipient, James Hetfield.

I gotta say this was one of the cooler events that I have covered this year. The Little Kids Rock program is such a great program…and the fact that it is backed by Facebook and supported by so many huge Bay Area musicians is amazing. Little Kids Rock works to raise awareness and funds to revitalize music programs in school districts hit hardest by budget cuts. The program has funded music programming for more than 112,000 public school children in 12 states since its founding in 2002.
The evening’s annual “Rockin’ The Bay” event was hosted at the Facebook HQ in Menlo Park, CA. The “campus” is huge. There are bars, restaurants with top quality chefs de cuisine, gyms, and even an arcade. In the back of the small event space, there was an assortment of signed music memorabilia and guitars as well as other music and non-music related items set up silent auction style to raise money for the program. Another highlight of the evening was the top notch bites cooked up by Facebook’s stellar culinary team. The event was also in honor of one of their own head chef, Josef Desimone, who was killed in a motorcycle accident this past summer. Psychedelic rockers, Moonalice, led by musician/businessman Roger McNamee, opened up the evening.
The next award honoree for the evening was bestowed upon Metallica’s James Hetfield. The kids presented him with the “Living The Dream” award on stage. The award is presented in the name of Chef Josef Desimone who was instrumental in creating this event. “We’re presenting James with this special award as a way to not only recognize his support of Little Kids Rock over the years,” said Little Kids Rock founder David Wish, ”but also his role as an inspirational presence in a band that has revolutionized and defined a music genre.”
Here’s where the real fun begins. Hetfield stayed on stage and was handed his guitar to perform with the kids on an original song they had written/arranged. The look on some of these kids faces was priceless! Bay Area musician, Chris Isaak rocked out while watching from the front row. And now for the highlight of the evening…Hetfield brings up musicians Jeff Campitelli [Joe Satriani], Marcus Henderson [Guitar Hero video game], and Tim Chang [Coverflow] to jam with the kids on Metallica’s own “Enter Sandman”!!! Amazing. The kids held their own on this one but Hetfield, Campitelli, Henderson and Chang really tore it up and were having a blast up there.
What a great evening for a great cause.
